On September 29th, the 72nd Harlequins Ball welcomed members and guests to the Montgomery Country Club to enjoy an evening of festivities and pay tribute to their 2021 queen. Seven other young lovely ladies were presented to Montgomery Society at the ball.

As guests arrived at the Montgomery Country Club, they were greeted by the Reception Committee, Nick Hines and Herbert Stevenson. They were directed to the ballroom, where drapes of silver and black, accented by red banners were hung at the ballroom doors, and behind presentation stage, which were decorated by Sarah Spratling and assisted by Ward Chesser and Nancy Fisher. Members of the Floor Committee, Evans Bailey and Grant Sexton, assisted in the seating of special guests and gathered the crowd for the presentation.

Under the direction of Rush Rice and Evans Bailey, Masters of Ceremonies, the tableau began with the entrance and seating of the beautiful ladies of Harlequins. The presentation stage was set with a silver throne for Queen Lainey and the King, which were flanked by two massive floral arrangements in vibrant autumnal colors featuring red roses. Next, the Harlequin members made a grand and boisterous entrance dressed in their traditional jester costumes of black and red argyle diamonds and black masks.

A bouquet of red roses was then presented to the queen’s mother, Mrs. Amy Odom Williams. Mrs. Mary Lee Yelverton accepted roses on behalf of her daughter, Miss Lee Gayle Yelverton, the 2020 Harlequins queen.

The tableau proceeded with the introduction of 7 beautiful debutantes of the 2021 Harlequins Ball.

Miss Anne Carlson Sylvest, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Maynard Sylvest, III. Miss Sylvest is escorted by Mr. Atwood Bullock Rush, III.

As the Queen’s Court was announced, the debutantes came into the spotlight for presentation with a smile and a curtsy. The young women then began their promenade down the center aisle of the ballroom and around to the Colonial Room. As the court processed into the Colonial Room, each debutant was again announced in front of a lush arrangement of red and hot pink roses, accented with antique green hydrangeas and large bronze fall mums, created by Sarah Spratling and Amanda Vinson. Each debutant carried a hand-tied nosegay of red and hot pink roses accented with coffee beans and a collar of salal leaves.

Finally, it was time for the presentation of the 72nd Queen of Harlequins. Miss Ann Elaine Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Dison McClure Williams. Granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. LD Fitzpatrick, Dr. and Mrs. Shepherd Albert Odom, and Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Aaron Williams. Her escort for the evening was Mr. Lee Ayers Sahlie. Miss Williams is a junior at the University of Alabama majoring in Elementary Education.

Queen Lainey was presented by the Harlequins Ball Captain, Philip Sellers, II. The beautiful and smiling queen waved her fleur de lis scepter to the adoring crowd and was attended by royal trainbearers, Mason Bass and Peter Thompson.

The Ball Captain wore traditional formal attire, white tie and tails, complete with top hat and cane and special black Mask.

Queen Lainey wore a beautiful A-line gown with a diamond white satin overlay with white and silver sequined lace. Her gown had a rounded neckline edged with Aurora Borealis rhinestones, and was specially designed for Lainey by a family friend.

Wearing the traditional Harlequins sparkling crown, Queen Lainey was greeted with cheers and applause as her captain escorted her around the Club’s mezzanine level. Lainey gave a royal wave with her glistening scepter to those gathered. Once seated on their throne, the Ball Captain gifted Queen Lainey with a beautiful hand painted piece of art by Laura Bear, of Laura Bear Fine Art.

Earlier in the day, the queen had presented the debutantes with an original art piece wrapped in an acrylic frame, also painted by Laura Bear. In keeping with tradition, the Ball Captain and Queen toasted one another with beautiful silver goblets. The Queen’s goblet was given in memory of 2005 Queen Stephanie Holt Harmon, by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Barry Holt Harmon.

A large group of Queen Lainey’s Delta Delta Delta sorority sisters from the University of Alabama and high school classmates from the Montgomery Academy were there to share in her exciting evening. After the Captain and Queen received guests, the party kicked into high gear with guests enjoying the band AZZ-IZZ performing on the ballroom stage. A special moment occurred when Queen Lainey and her brother, Dison, danced on stage as the band played “Sweet Home Alabama”.

To top off the evening, the queen’s parents, Chris and Amy Williams, entertained the debutantes, their parents, friends, family and the Harlequins Board at a delicious post-ball Queen’s Breakfast on the MCC Bluestone Patio. The buffet was decorated with a simple glass vase of white hydrangeas with rust colored coffee beans. Each table on the Bluestone held flowers with accompanied sparkling votive candles. Breakfast guests were entertained by John Wilson, longtime friend and fraternity brother of the queen’s father. As an unexpected surprise, the queen’s uncle, Robb Newton, also participated in the entertainment, making an ending to this wonderful night extra special.
